Composition Preparatory Class

Age group: Primary 4-6 students

Number of students per class: 4-6

This course is aimed at students who are interested in composition and are currently learning musical instruments and music theory. This one-year course enables students to understand melody and rhythm, basic concepts of creating music and application of arrangement software. Students will use iPads and manuscript paper for composing, and will need to bring their own iPads for class. 

Pre-requisites:

1.            Applicants must have reached a standard of ABRSM Grade 4 theory;

2.        Applicants will be asked to do a music theory assessment including composing an 8-bar simple melody on a given theme, and an interview.

 

Composition I

Age group: 10-20 (Student Class)

Number of students per class: 2-4

This one-year course trains students to apply fundamental composition techniques in developing creative ideas. The first semester includes exploration of different musical elements such as melody and rhythm. Students complete a designated project based on a picture story. The second semester focuses on the application of computer software and live recording techniques to complete a work based on a poem. In the final semester, students complete an instrumental composition which integrates basic composition techniques and music arrangement. 

Pre-requisites:

1.   Applicants must have reached a standard of ABRSM Grade 5 theory or above;

2.   Applicants will be asked to do a music theory assessment and an interview.

 

Composition II

Age group: 11-20 (Student Class)     

Number of students per class: 2-4

In this one-year course, the first semester introduces students to the modern pop band, and they will learn to utilize the midi function, built-in sound source and synthesizer of Logic Pro X to make a pop-band style music arrangement. The second and third semesters focus on developing composition skills. Students will complete a solo instrumental piece and a chamber music work. 

Pre-requisites:

Completion of “Composition I” with merit and upon recommendation by the course teacher.
